If the Nevada Senate has its way, yellow page ads such as Dominant & Submissive of Nevada and Sinfully Sexie will be a thing of the past. The upper house has voted to outlaw both sexually suggestive billboard advertising and outcall escort services.

Senate Bill 392 is the product of the Senate Judiciary Committee. If it becomes law, it would make ads now appearing in the Las Vegas telephone book's yellow pages illegal. The legislation is now in the Las Vegas Nevada Assembly and must go through hearings in the lower house's Judiciary Committee.

The proposal also said billboards and taxicab placards cannot show advertising considered harmful to children. Juries, however, would determine on an individual basis whether a particular Las Vegas advertisement should be prohibited.

Sen. Mark James, R-Las Vegas, gave a passionate speech on the Senate floor urging passage of the bill. James, a father of two, said he wanted to make Las Vegas a nicer place for children.

But Sen. Joe Neal, D-North Las Vegas, ridiculed the proposal during floor debate. Neal was the only senator who voted against the bill.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department backed outlawing escort services. Metro officers testified that escort services are fronts for prostitution during hearings on the proposal, Las Vegas has approximately 205 escort services in operation, up from a reported 85 three years ago.
